An exciting new project being part of the Big Lottery Funded chances4change programme requires an Activity Access Worker
to work across Oxfordshire supporting people with mental health problems to take part in sport and physical activities, to work with mainstream facilities
to make them more accessible and to challenge stigma and discrimination.
37 hours per week

What is the job?
To work across Oxfordshire to support people with mental health problems to take part in sport and physical activities by promoting the benefits of exercise to people with mental health problems, organising and facilitating a range of sports activities, working with mainstream facilities to make them more accessible and to challenge stigma and discrimination.
What does it involve?
Being an Activities Development Worker involves
Coasters Support and Development (40%)
- To work in partnership with the Coasters service which is an active user led organisation with a culture of involvement and engagement
- To recruit beneficiaries to the project to participate in exercise and sporting activities
- To meet with beneficiaries in order to support them in on-going evaluation of their needs and achievements
- To actively promote to beneficiaries the direct benefits of exercise in uplifting mood, reinforcing positive emotions and making people feel good about themselves
- To enable beneficiaries to participate in local, regional, national, and European mental health and mainstream sporting competitions
- To support beneficiaries to become volunteers
- To Establish an annual Oxfordshire Mental Health Multi Sport Competition with Coasters
Day Services Support and Development (40%)
- To network with local day services to promote the service and recruit beneficiaries
- To support and provide information to day service staff
- To organise sports events
- To establish sports groups
Training and Consultancy (20%)
- To provide training and consultancy for mainstream sports and leisure settings, making these settings more accessible for beneficiaries.
- To provide training events for staff in mainstream sports and leisure settings, thereby making these settings more accessible to beneficiaries
- To provide consultancy and advice sessions to staff in mainstream sports and leisure settings
- To create and facilitate an Oxfordshire mental health and sport network
Experience
We need people with a range of skills and experience. Some of which may be particularly helpful include:
- Knowledge of mental health issues
- Ability to communicate with, motivate, inspire and support people
- An understanding of the process of change
- Excellent one to one skills
- A variety of sporting abilities and willingness to learn new sports skills
- The ability to work on their own initiative
- Ability to work outside of office hours and on weekends
- Awareness of and commitment to all aspects of anti-discriminatory practice
- Marketing and public relations skills to promote and develop the service
- Ability to facilitate and run training and other groups
- Ability to form good effective working relationships and work as part of a team
- Ability to communicate with people on all levels
- Excellent organisational skills
- Ability to write reports and keep records
- Appropriate self-presentation for contact with different groups of people
- Ability to travel around Oxfordshire
- Ability to travel nationally
- Computer literacy
