What is The Beehive?

The Beehive is a community mental health service based in Manzil Way, Oxford. We offer people with mental health problems a therapeutic work environment that is supportive, creative, purposeful, and fun. We offer people the opportunity to socialise and learn new skills in horticulture, print, woodwork, catering and retail. We place a strong emphasis on design and creativity.

How does the Beehive work?

The Beehive staff believes that everyone has the capacity to make a valuable contribution to the community and work towards helping people build their levels of confidence and self-esteem. People are encouraged to participate in a team and develop new work skills. This process fosters a culture where people can recognise and build on their abilities, and start to believe that they can change things. Working at The Beehive, people learn skills, gain insight into their strengths, and consider positive changes they wish to make. We acknowledge that this can be hard work, so regular time is set aside to reflect on how things are going, both as a team and as individuals.

A Benefits Advisor provides guidance on income and financial matters and an Employment Support Worker provides support when people are ready to move on to further training, volunteering, or paid work.

How often do people come here?

The group is open Monday to Friday between 9am and 3pm, with lunch provided. Whilst some people come every day, most attend on a part-time basis. Everyone has regular meetings with an identified staff member and, where appropriate, a statutory key worker, providing an opportunity to review and reflect on the placement.

How do people join The Beehive?

People join the project through being referred by a member of their care team or people can refer themselves. After an initial visit, a six week trial period will be arranged.
