What is Elder Stubbs Garden Group?

Elder Stubbs Garden Group is a community mental health service based on Elder Stubbs Allotments in Cowley. We offer people with mental health problems a therapeutic work environment that is structured, purposeful and creative. The service offers people the opportunity to develop skills in horticulture, cooking, woodwork, marketing and other crafts. We have a popular shop on the site, where we sell our produce to the public on Thursdays. Working as a team, we encourage our members to try new things and to build their confidence. There are opportunities for members to achieve qualifications such as Basic Food Hygiene.

How does Elder Stubbs Garden Group work?

The most important link between members is the commitment made to themselves and to the group through being involved in both the work and social aspects of the project. The group provides a supportive environment where people can share problems and challenges, and also develop an understanding of the needs and concerns of others. Potential members need to be committed to identifying their goals and working towards them.

A Benefits Advisor provides guidance on income and financial matters and an Employment Support Worker provides support when people are ready to move on to further training, volunteering, or paid work.

How often do people come here?

The group is open Monday to Friday between 9am and 3pm, with lunch provided. Whilst some people come every day, most attend on a part-time basis. Everyone has regular meetings with an identified staff member and, where appropriate, a statutory key worker, providing an opportunity to review and reflect on the placement.

How can people join Elder Stubbs Garden Group?

People join the project through being referred by a member of their care team or by their GP, or by referring themselves. After an initial visit a trial day will be arranged.
