About Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Training

Mental Health First Aid is the help given to someone experiencing a mental health difficulty before professional help is obtained, similar to the First Aid in physical health. The training is accredited by Mental Health First Aid England and the MHFA global community has trained over a million people in 26 countries.

The course teaches people how to recognise the symptoms of mental ill health, how to provide the initial help and how to guide a person towards the appropriate professional help.

The qualification is valid for three years from the date of course completion. We recommend MHFAiders to keep their skills and knowledge up to date with MHFA Refresher training.

Mental health problems can affect people at any time of life in different ways. Many people suffer a mental illness for a long time before they seek help. There is widespread ignorance of mental ill health in the general population and there is the associated stigma too. For some the stigma can lead to delays in people seeking help and support. There is also a lack of confidence in what to do if someone is distressed or in a crisis situation.

Public awareness and peer support are crucial when it comes to meeting mental health needs in society. This will achieve a mentally healthy environment in the long run.

Mental Health First Aid is a response to someone who may need support with their mental health with the aim of improving mental health literacy throughout communities, with the belief that mental health crises can sometimes be avoided with early intervention.

MHFA is for anyone aged 16 or over who wants to increase their knowledge and confidence in identifying early signs of mental ill health and learn the right skills for supporting others, and not going through mental ill health at the moment.

MHFA is particularly beneficial to you if –

– You are responsible for your staff.
– You interact with the public in your job.
– You want to improve your knowledge and understanding of mental health issues in general.
