Taking the first step to better mental health

More often than not in life, taking the first step can be the hardest. From learning to drive, to looking for a new job, stepping towards something new takes courage.

If struggling with mental health, taking the first step towards recovery can feel overwhelming. But, recognising that help is available and making a start, no matter how small, is often the biggest and most important step.

Some tips on taking the first step from Restore‘s Compass Recovery Group:

  1. To admit a struggle is hard, but there’s no shame in it. It’s important we’re kind to ourselves. Seeking help is something that everyone needs to do at times.

  2. Create and maintain a morning routine. Starting everyday with structure and positivity makes a difference.

  3. Start a ‘low pressure plan’. Set manageable and achievable goals to tick-off and start to feel a sense of accomplishment.

  4. Actively try to be with others. Whether in-person or online, connections can boost mood, reduce stress and improve self-esteem.
